Iam over walking my dog?

I take my 6 month neapolitan mastiff for a walk to a open area which takes 5 min then i let him loose and he run all over the place he will stop and smell something .. i would just keep walking then he would sprint like 40 yd do it over again run all around..is this to much excrise for him .... but my pup is very hyper i mean very
