Is GOD a male or female?

The Bible and the world say HIM when we pray. The Bible was written by man NOT God. I believe the writer was under umption that God was a HE. I catch myself almost always referring to cops. fireman etc as Him, He, that man & so on..............What are your thoughts on this??
