Will a distortion pedal make my fender starcaster guitar sound better?

I want that heavy metal sound for my guitar. I have a sp 10 combo amp but i hate the sound to the overdrive. I found a distortion pedal that's is about $20 but i not sure if i should get it because it is so cheap. does that mean it is not good or should i get
