What did the American Indians do when a member in their society needed...?

I have taken college courses on this and actually know a Native American shaman. They use natural plants, ceremonies,and prayers. There are plants used to heal something, like infections, or to help avoid it, but in another region of the country, there may not be that plant. Each region would have it's own herbal plants.
